Verdict: 5/10When it comes to games it's fair to say that up until the N-Gage software was announced, the level of graphical development on handheld videogames was less than satisfactory - there have been some absolutely stunning games created for the PlayStation and Nintendo handhelds over the years, but most are quite average in terms of power and scale. The PlayStation Portable was a major step forward in videogame graphics, but even if PSP games weren't improved by that, the N-Gage really could have delivered. Whether the design team at Nokia had any idea what they were doing when they were designing the games - they certainly didn't for the hardware and software - is another issue, but in many ways it doesn't really matter all that much in this case. A number of the N-Gage games are stunning, but the software launch didn't necessarily give us a chance to play every game in the environment we'd ideally like to be playing them in. Nokia is clearly looking to commission development to ensure it offers more compelling virtual worlds for the industry to work with, but if it doesn't do that speedily then this device may not quite take off like Nokia wants it to.
The hardware itself is certainly no slouch, with a 5-inch touch screen, accelerometer and high quality audio on board. When you consider that the N-Gage is built on a significantly powerful ARM processor using an Imagination PowerVR graphics processing unit, it's pretty impressive that the software has been such a low-key launch. The games selection is interesting as well - although it's a mix of PlayStation and Nintendo titles, there aren't many alternative gaming genres represented here. TOEI had ambitions of having a huge gaming library, but perhaps they underestimated just how many games (in both genres) would be available to it. Nokia's first choice was to add games generated by independent developers - that would have been nice - but perhaps this will have been a blessing in disguise, given that mobile games developer resources are quite limited right now, and TOEI might not have managed to have the same quality games available to it as other developers. 7211a4ac4a
