A new research report from the Pew Research Center helps paint a picture of where such views are most pronounced, and that picture is strikingly different than what critics of the radical right long have maintained.
The research shows that nearly a quarter of all Americans now self-identify as “far-right” — placing them between Libertarian and traditionalist conservatives. The most “far-right” groups are “traditionalists” — meaning they believe traditional American values are under attack and want to roll back freedoms and advance a “Christian” alternative. The National Rifle Association is the most partisan among these individuals.
While many mainstream, liberal Americans may consider the right-leaning “far-right” to be radical, the research suggests the groups supporting these views have been fairly mainstream for some time.
Traditionalists have been the main force behind the Republican Party for the past several decades, and their views have been mainstream as long as that party has existed. For all of the rhetoric about the “center-right” being akin to the “center-left,” traditionalists tend to be similar to traditional conservatives on key issues.
Similarly, the “libertarians” — groups that tend to be on the left-most end of the political spectrum — also are different from traditionalist conservatives on the traditionalist side. Instead, they want to advance private property rights and, potentially, a laissez-faire view of government.
